Mount Zion BC History
In 1867, Mount Zion Baptist Church was organized under the leadership of its first pastor, Rev. Sam Nelson. Along with Henderson Thomas and Charlie Dinkins, Rev. Nelson conducted a revival and baptism at the very site where the church stands today.
Following Rev. Nelson's leadership, the church was pastored by Rev. Square Sims, Rev. Ed Jefferson, and Rev. Bush Rose.
In 1926, Rev. Kelly Key was called to serve as pastor. Although he did not receive a set salary, he was given two-thirds of the church's offerings. Adult members were also asked to contribute 35 cents per month toward the church's general support.
Additional pastors who faithfully served Mount Zion include Rev. Eugene Dyles, Rev. J.D. Wiggins, Rev. J.E. Gillie, Rev. L.C. Smith, Rev. L.T. Walker, Rev. Patrick Dennis, and Rev. Morgan W. Coleman.
Throughout its history, Mount Zion has also been blessed with several associate ministers, including Rev. George Thomas, Rev. William Powell, Rev. Anthony Coleman, Rev. C.D. Bryant, Jr., Rev. Andrew Coleman, Rev. Patrick Marshall, and Rev. Cleave Sanford.
In addition to its ministers, Mount Zion has been faithfully served by many dedicated deacons, including Charlie Dinkins, Ellis Bryant, Clayborn Brown, Osborn Gary, Henderson Thomas, George Thomas, Frank Dewhart, John Coleman, Willie Johnson, Arthur Sims, Roy Tuiel, Elisha Dinkins, Grant P. Ford, Jake Youngblood, Jr., Henry Carter, Sr., Hardy Bryant, Sammie Youngblood, Henry Thomas, Dewitt Harris, Alfred Hall, Bennie Thomas, Jerry Thomas, Carl Youngblood, and Alvin Fortner.
Mount Zion has also been richly blessed with many gifted musicians who have faithfully contributed to the worship ministry throughout the years.
The church proudly adopted its official motto: "The Church That Puts God First," inspired by Matthew 6:33.
Keeping the Faith
Presently, Mount Zion Baptist Church is under the faithful leadership of Pastor Marshall Mitchell, who has served as pastor for nearly 11 years. Throughout his ministry, Pastor Mitchell has consistently emphasized the importance of prayer, unwavering faith in God, and the teaching of His Word. Standing faithfully beside him is First Lady Janet Mitchell, whose love and support have been a blessing to the church family.
Currently serving as deacons are Deacon Vernon Bryant and Deacon Raymond Lemon. The church's Music Director is Barbara Lane, and Betty Carmack faithfully serves as the Church Clerk.
Through the years, Mount Zion Baptist Church has weathered many storms and remained a beacon of hope within the community. Having endured difficult seasons, including multiple pandemics, the church has never lost sight of its God-given vision. Under Pastor Mitchell's leadership, the congregation has remained committed to preserving and improving the church facilities.
Significant renovations and improvements have included painting the sanctuary, replacing lighting fixtures, purchasing new microphones, repairing the fellowship hall, painting the exterior of the church, purchasing a new keyboard, painting the back hallway and finance office, installing new restroom commodes, and, most recently, resurfacing and repairing the church parking lot.
The strength of Mount Zion continues to be rooted in its commitment to prayer and the study of God's Word. Weekly prayer meeting and Bible study, held every Wednesday, have remained vital to the spiritual growth and endurance of the congregation.
Mount Zion has also remained dedicated to serving the surrounding community through various outreach ministries, including Coat and Chili Giveaways, clothing giveaways, and an evangelism team committed to sharing the Gospel and inviting others to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
Founded upon the Chief Cornerstone, Jesus Christ, Mount Zion Baptist Church remains steadfast in its faith and mission. As the church continues to grow, its purpose is still unfolding, and its commitment remains unchanged—to glorify God, serve the community, and welcome, disciple, and guide future generations in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.
